According to style writer Elizabeth Mayhew for The Washington Post, “Moroccan rug designs originated from the Beni Ourain people, who comprise 17 Berber tribes from the Atlas Mountains. These rugs have distinctive designs, which range from ordered geometric shapes to more free-form, expressive patterns.”

Antique and Vintage Moroccan rugs are actually true, collectible pieces of art that will only increase in value over time. Roaming Berber tribes that inhabited the Atlas Mountains developed these distinctive art forms in the process of adjusting to the harsh conditions. These weaving tribes have mostly been preoccupied with sheep herding – the source of their excellent, high grade wool. This largely contributed to the quality of their textiles which was crucial for the good preservation of heat and the protection from wind and sand because originally, these Berber rugs were used as bedspreads, blankets and covers rather than decorative elements.
