Have you wondered about the psychology of color and how it can affect you?  The colors and designs surrounding you affect your overall health and your spirit.  They enhance your mood and ultimately help you live better.  When you think about the colors you want to use in your home décor, a certain color will usually come to mind. People instinctively understand color. Certain hues affect perception and influence your feelings and actions. Of course, just because you have a fondness for a particular color doesn’t mean it needs to adorn the walls of your home. Fine area rugs are the perfect way to add a pop of color to your space while keeping the walls neutral.  One way to improve your home’s atmosphere, and make it a truly comforting, joyful, and calming environment, is to fine-tune the colors of each room depending on its function.

Dining Room: You may have noticed that restaurants often use red in their décor. That’s because research points to red as an appetite stimulant. Red can actually increase your metabolism, making you feel hungry. Guests may think you’re an amazing cook if you invite them to meals in your red dining room.

If you’d like to limit your indulgences, you might want to try a color other than red in the rooms in which you eat. Yellow is energizing and happy and is a great choice for a kitchen.

The Bedroom: Yellow may create a cheerful atmosphere in a kitchen; however, you might want to steer clear of yellow in the bedroom! Studies show that babies cry more in yellow rooms. The bedroom is a sanctuary where we shed the stresses of the day and prepare for rejuvenating sleep. The place where you rest your head should be calming and peaceful. It should be a room where you can connect with yourself and your partner. You may also want to avoid using reds and oranges in a bedroom. Instead, saturate the space with cooler colors.  The more intense the color, the more powerful its effect may be. A navy blue room might just be the thing you need for a completely restful night.

Living Areas: Rooms in which guests tend to gather, such as the living room or entrance hall, should encourage conversation. Studies show that warm hues, like reds, rust colors and earth tones, can help bring such an atmosphere. These colors inspire people to feel friendly and open, fostering connection.

Make your living areas appealing by infusing neutrality into the colors you use. Instead of bright cherry red, think rusty brick. Change out canary yellow for a more subdued mustard. Tone down a bright orange with some rusty tinges. Don’t rule out earthy browns, either.
