Using Feng Shui to Create a Bedroom Retreat

By: David Neishabori

Your bedroom is your retreat from the outside world. It is where you seek rest and relaxation. Of all places, this is where you want to create a tranquil space. One of the easiest ways to decorate your bedroom is to consider the Chinese tradition of Feng Shui. The concept is focused on balance, organization, and health. To learn some terrific tips about creating a Feng Shui bedroom atmosphere then please keep reading.

Focus on Serenity

When selecting design concepts for your bedroom you should focus your entire inner emotions on serenity. The space of your bedroom should make you feel at ease, comfortable, safe, secure, and supportive. Creating a room that lives and breathes such concepts will increase your health and wellbeing outside the space. You’ll be amazed at the positive effect that it will have on your very existence.

Positioning Your Bed

There is one command that you must follow if you want to create Feng Shui in your bedroom and that is you must adhere to the guidelines about the positioning of the bed. Ideally, the bed should be placed diagonally from the door. When you are sitting in your bed you should be able to see the door but not be in perfect lime with it.  Avoid placing your headboard so it is in direct line with the door.

Your Headboard Choices

It is imperative that you have a solid headboard that has no perforations. It should also be attached to the bed. The headboard is believed to fuse a bond between you and your partner. It offers stability to all sides such as the feminine and the masculine. Ideally, choose solid wood or upholstered.

Bringing Nature Indoors

Nature creates a relaxing atmosphere which is why you should make plants an integral part of your bedroom design. Choose only plants that have rounded and soft edges. Succulents are ideal. Also, snake plants have a reputation for producing copious amounts of oxygen which will help you sleep better.

Use Your Favorite Colors

Your bedroom is your retreat. You should adorn the walls and ceiling with colors that have personal meaning. Feng Shui often leans toward earthy tones because they soothe and relax, but your bedroom reflects your style so go with hues that feel right.

Space and Balance

Both sides of the bed should have ample space to get in and out of the bed. In addition, there should be nightstands on both sides of the bed to provide the air of balance. Everything does not have to match perfectly, but it just must be balanced.

Lighting is Important

Your bedroom should not be pitch black at night. Having a bit of light in the room while you sleep inspires clarity and mental brilliance. It also eases depression. Create a soft glow in the room. While you are awake, light a candle or two to create intimacy but never leave them burning while you sleep.

Keep Family Photos out of the Bedroom

The confines of the bedroom should be private. Hanging family photos gives you a feeling or sensation that your children, siblings, or parents are in the room watching you. Such emotions put a damper on any intimacy and do not allow you to be free with yourself. Your bedroom should only be about you and your partner. Keep personal photos out of the room. If you decide to hang artwork on the walls then always hang the paintings or photographs high because placing them low on the wall can cause depression.

Eliminate Clutter in the Bedroom

Clutter creates stress. Also, it is dangerous. If you get up in the middle of the night, then you can trip and fall over some strewn object. Your bedroom should be about open space. Even the area under your bed should be clutter free so that your chi remains healthy and you obtain positive energy. If you have no other choice but to store items under your bed then only place pillows, blankets, and comforters in the space. Do not shove mementos, clothes, or shoes in the area.

Connecting with the Earth’s Energy

When your feet are on the ground you are connected to the Earth’s energy. Every time you step onto the floor you should feel something soft beneath your feet that is almost luxurious. Ideally, place a rug that you genuinely love in your bedroom beside the side or foot of your bed. A handwoven masterpiece is a perfect surface for your feet to land upon as you swing out of bed and start the day.
