Ideas for Planning a Gender-Neutral Nursery

By: David Neishabori

Are you planning to be surprised by the gender of your unborn baby? Or do you plan to be an ultra-modern parent and raise your bundle of joy to be gender neutral?  Whatever your reasoning, gender-neutral nurseries are all the rage. You want your baby’s space to be well-designed, stylish, chic, playful, and loaded with fun concepts.

Choose Light Wood Accents

Wood is earthy and natural. There is no male or female. Choose wood for the crib, bookcase, shiplap ceiling, or wainscot. Work green into the room’s tone to truly have a return to Mother Nature. Within such a decor, you’ll want to layer two vastly distinctive style rugs to create even further contrast. In addition, the rug’s surface will be the area where your little one crawls or takes their first steps.

Focus on the Ceiling

Your baby lays in their crib staring up at the ceiling so why not give them something spectacular to focus on? Create stripes in orange and white. Swirls and twists or classic pattern. Leaves, birds, the sky, angels, or the stars. The possibilities are endless. You’ll want to balance the look with very neutral walls like shades of gray. Then lay down a handwoven rug that complements the hues found in the ceiling.

Create a Statement Wall

Yes, you can create a completely neutral nursery, but why not make a statement wall that stands out? Choose to line the wall in stuffies or shelves. You can even highlight the wall with flowers or tree design.  Let your imagination flow when it comes to the statement wall. The wall will undoubtedly live on your child’s memories for the rest of their life, so you want it to be something truly outstanding.

Black and White

Is there anything more neutral than a classic black and white decor?  Did you know that newborns can only see in black and white? Some scientists say that the lack of color in the infant’s sight persists for up to three months. Choose patterned pieces to create visual interest. You want to stimulate your baby’s sight and imagination. Do not overwhelm them with the design but opt for something subtle and classic.

Colorful Rugs

You can go low key on the walls, but why not make the room pop with an extraordinary rug? Multicolored rugs are chic and gender neutral. Remember, you are going to be rolling around on that rug a lot with your baby as you teach them to crawl and walk. Plus you will be sitting together on the comfortable expanse playing. Without a doubt, the rug that you choose for your baby’s nursery is a critical item and should truly stand out.

Circus Theme

Lately, the circus theme has become immensely popular in genderless nurseries. You can incorporate animals, clowns, and colors without denoting sex. Flags, a play tent, and lots of exotic stuffed animals complete the look.

Geometric Shapes

Babies and toddlers are fascinated with shapes. It is their way of trying to piece together the new world around them. Using geometric shapes is not only a fun option but also educational. You can choose a geometric hanging mobile, crib bedding, and a rug with geometric shapes to add dimension to the room.

Create a Gallery Wall

Paintings, prints, typography, animal heads, and sculptures are all wonderful choices for a gallery wall.  It gives your baby’s nursery the feeling of being an art museum. Without a doubt, it adds visual interest for your little one to appreciate.

Animals and More Animals

Focusing the room on an animal theme is a tiny bit like the circus idea but without the big top and clowns. All babies and children love animals. Such a design theme is completely gender-less and helps your little one grows up to appreciate all the creatures that call the Earth home.

Polka Dots

Colorful dots can line the walls and bedding of the room. You can even find a rug with dots. For some reason, babies often become enamored with polka dots and they are a fun way to make a gender-neutral statement. Pink, red, yellow, blue, purple, green, and orange. Go with all the shades of the rainbow.

The World

Here is a remarkably interesting design idea: the world. Paint or hang a map of the world on the wall. From infancy onward, your child will learn about the appearance of the world. You can even combine celestial space with the globe. Truly, global awareness created at a youthful age has lifetime ramifications.
