3 Ways to Pair Area Rugs with Pantone’s “Viva Magenta” – 2023 Color of the Year.

Brace yourself! Pantone’s 2023 Color of the Year, “Viva Magenta” is vibrating with VIM and VIGOR. According to Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, “Viva Magenta is a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal of strength.  Viva Magenta is brave, and fearless, and a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration!”  Viva Magenta is making a lot of promises, including welcoming anyone and everyone with, “the same verve for life and rebellious spirit.”

Viva Magenta is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family (used for generations in the rug dying industry).  It is known as one of the strongest and brightest red dyes the world has known. Technically, cochineal, is a a tiny, cactus-dwelling insect that produces a vibrant red pigment and has been harvested for thousands of years by Indigenous peoples to produce a dye for their own textiles.

The big question here is: who exactly is daring enough, and willing, to incorporate this hot, reddish, pink shade into their home or the homes of their clients? We’ll let the design community work on that while we suggest 3 ways to pair area rugs with “Viva Magenta”.

The first thing to do when selecting your area rugs is to choose your color palette.  Start out by looking at the color wheel and seeing which complimentary shades are opposite each other.  Across from magenta you’ll find green.  By combining green and magenta you’ll create a rich, bold, eclectic look, with a powerful contrast.  Suppose you decide to use magenta for the walls (a daring choice), this green rug will provide the contrast you are looking for with a romantic, Boho feeling.

If it’s a softer, gentler color palette you’re after, try pairing magenta with neutral earth tones.  This will provide a soothing base and allow the rich reddish pink to stand out even more. This combination makes a classic, timeless color palette that will mirror nature.  Magenta calling to mind the sunset, and the earth tones reflecting a desert landscape.  This modern Moroccan style rug combines ivory and taupe and will lend a contemporary neutral tone to the space.

While magenta can look soft and cozy, it certainly doesn’t have to look that way. Think about creating a modern, edgy vibe by pairing magenta with a black area rug! This will play up the dramatic, jewels tones of viva magenta, putting it in the spotlight. Adding a black area rug will create an instantly chic, modern look – perfect for a modern home.  Another selection from our Modern Moroccan Collection, this black area rug is sure to ground the feel of the room while providing the perfect backdrop for Viva Magenta.

All in all, Viva magenta is extremely versatile and goes with many colors. Whether you team it with warmer or cooler hues, AZADI Fine Rugs has something for every style.

Navajo rugs are shrouded in legends. The Native American tribe teaches that a goddess named Spider Woman instructed the people on weaving. The first loom was fashioned from the sky and earth cords were made from sunlight, crystal, and white shells. Although the story is lovely, historians believe that the Navajo people learned weaving from their Pueblo neighbors.
